Food Security & Nutrition

Programs directly addressing hunger and basic nutrition needs with a focus on achieving SDG 2

Our Food Security and Nutrition initiatives aim to ensure all individuals, especially vulnerable populations, have reliable access to safe, nutritious, and enough food for a healthy, active life.

We address both immediate hunger and long-term nutritional health through direct food aid, sustainable agriculture, nutrition education, and targeted feeding programs.

Diaconia is expanding its new pantry in the South Bronx to serve over 400 individuals each week, directly addressing a community where nearly 28% of residents and 44% of families with children face food insecurity—the highest rates in New York City. With food pantry visits in the Bronx up 80% from pre-pandemic levels and many families still struggling to access enough nutritious food, this expansion will provide critical relief and stability for local households. The pantry will offer a wide range of healthy staples and fresh options, aiming to reduce hunger, support family well-being, and foster resilience in one of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods.

Our Strategies

Through these combined efforts, we aim to eradicate hunger, combat malnutrition, and develop sustainable food systems that secure food and nutritional health for everyone.

One Meal One Smile

We serve daily nutritious meals to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, ensuring no one goes hungry and everyone can enjoy a healthy meal with dignity. This effort not only alleviates immediate hunger but also promotes community solidarity and hope.

Food Pantry / Food Bank

Our food pantries and food banks deliver a variety of staple and fresh foods to those in need, supplementing household nutrition and reducing hunger risk. These accessible, community-oriented programs support families in crisis or transition.

Agricultural Development

We support agricultural growth by encouraging home gardens, community farming, and sustainable practices. Empowering communities and individuals to grow their own food boosts the availability and variety of nutritious options, supports local economies, and strengthens resilience against food shortages.

Food Processing and Storage Facility – Coming Soon

In response to the global food crisis, Diaconia is developing a Food Processing and Storage Facility that showcases human ingenuity and environmental stewardship. By promoting organic fertilizers and sustainable farming, we are breaking the cycle of chemical dependence and supporting both immediate food needs and long-term planetary health.

This initiative goes beyond resource distribution—we educate farmers, empower communities, and foster food security that respects nature. As we prepare to launch, we are cultivating hope, sustainability, and a renewed connection to the land.

Coming soon: a new chapter in sustainable food solutions. A visionary organization has sown the seeds of change, revolutionizing agricultural practices through the use of organic fertilizers and cutting-edge innovations.

Nutrition

Our nutrition programs focus on education, awareness, and promoting healthy eating behaviors. We offer resources, workshops, and counseling to enhance nutritional knowledge and habits, helping people make informed choices that foster lifelong health.

School Lunches

We work with schools to provide feeding programs that ensure students receive at least one nutritious meal daily. These initiatives improve children’s health, academic success, and school attendance, especially among low-income families.

Our commitment extends to assisting the impoverished and oppressed, supporting the less fortunate, and honoring those who have lost their lives. Whether at home or abroad, every life we touch is a testament to our shared humanity.
